ITINERARY DESCRIPTION BY DAY
Arrival to Tanzania
We stay at a lovely hotel in Arusha while preparing you for an experience.Your head mountain guide will meet you for an equipment check and pre-climb briefing.
Day 1 : Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave: | Moorland
The ascent begins at Umbwe Gate (1,800 m.) Through the thick montane forest, the path ascends along a ridge that runs between two deep valleys. The site is tucked in between two enormous trees and a lot of vegetation. Since there is no water on site, we must bring everything we need for drinking, cooking, and cleaning from the gate.
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave (at 3,000 m); 6-8 hours walking.
Day 2 : Umbwe Cave – Barranco Camp: | Moorland
As you leave the forest and continue along the Umbwe slope, the trail becomes steeper. It then gradually descends to the valley, where the Barranco camp is located.
Umbwe Cave to Barranco valley (3,950 m); 4-6 hours walking.
Day 3 : Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp: | Alpine Desert
We arrive right below the Heim Glacier after a strenuous ascent up the eastern side, where we might be treated to some breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro. Following a steep descent into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, we have a strong ascent to Karanga Camp. This is separated from the southeast slopes of Kibo by the Great Barranco Wall.
Barranco Valley to Karanga camp (4,000 m): 4-5 hours walking.
Day 4 : Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp: | Alpine Desert
After leaving Karanga, the terrain becomes easier to navigate across compacted scree with expansive vistas all the way to Barafu Camp. From the Barafu Camp, one can view Kibo and Mawenzi. The rest of the day is spent relaxing as we get ready for the last ascent before an early-evening summit trek after a nice lunch at the camp.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600 m.): 3-4 hours walking.
Day 6 : Barafu Camp – Summit: up | – Mweka CAMP: down| Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit
Before midnight, in the shadows, get up. A slow but steady pace will get us to Stella Point, which is the rim of the main crater, at a height of 5,735 meters, after we start a hard climb over loose volcanic scree with some well-graded zigzags. We’ll take a little break there to watch the sunrise over Mawenzi. The main peak (5,895 m), which is the highest point in Africa, is two hours away from here along the crater rim for those who are still in good spirits. Once you’ve had a chance to take in what you’ve accomplished, we quickly descend to Barafu Camp, where we pause for a snack before continuing to Mweka Camp.
Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp (3100 m): 13-15 hours walking.
Day 6 : Mweka Camp– Mweka Gate | Rainforest
Successful climbers will collect their summit certificates at Mweka gate after a leisurely stroll through the rainforest. We take a drive back to Arusha following lunch. Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate is a 3- to 5-hour hike.
